Santa Claus is Coming to Town – The Spirit of Christmas in Christmas Songs (Part 2/3)

The Spirit of Christmas in Christmas Songs (Part 2/3)

This is the second song in my list of Christmas songs that show the spirit of Christmas. Everyone knows that if you rearrange Santa’s name you get Satan, which is most appropriately. After all, millions of people worship Santa Claus as all knowing and who has the authority to reward or punish.

Its purpose is to help parents lie to their children and to teach them to reverence a man who deserves no glory. This song was written in 1932 by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie, but hit the airwaves in 1934. It was also the first song written in a series of top Christmas songs during the period of 1932-1951.

Original Song My Commentary
(I just got back from a lovely trip
along the Milky Way
I stopped off at the North Pole
to spend a holiday.
I called on dear old Santa Claus
to see what I could see.
He took me in his workshop
And told his plans to me, so…)
To begin with this man has the ability to travel the Milky Way, which is odd since no man can travel it.Like a prophet of God, Santa Claus took this man into his confidence and told him what he planned to do for the children of the world. Now his job was to go out and warn the children.
You better watch out!
Better not cry!
Better not pout!
I’m telling you why,
Santa Claus is comin’ to town.
The warning starts out with telling the children they better be good while watching what they do because Santa Claus is coming to visit them.
He’s making a list
and checking it twice.
He’s going to find out who’s naughty and nice.
Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.
He knows who’s good and who’s bad. If you’re good you’ll be put on his good list. You better stay good because he’s checking it twice. If you’re bad then you get cut from the list and receive no gifts from him.
He sees you when you’re sleeping.
He knows when you’re awake.
He knows if you’ve been bad or good.
So be good for goodness sake!
He sees all and knows all. He is attributed god-like characteristics. You either receive a gift or not. It depends on how you acted all year long, but the writer is begging you to be good.
You better watch out!
Better not cry!
Better not pout!
I’m telling you why,
Santa Claus is comin’ to town.
He confirms what he expects from you.
With little tin horns and little toy drums,
rootie-toot-toots and rum-a-tum tums.
Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.
Santa Claus is bringing his gifts with him soon. Maybe if we tell the children what they may get they will behave better?
Curly head dolls that toddle and coo,
elephants, boats and kiddie cars too.
Santa Claus is comin’ to town.
These are more gifts Santa is bringing the good boys and girls.
The kids and girls in boyland
will have a jubilee.
They’re going to build a toyland town,
all around the Christmas tree.
Normally, the phrase is boys and girls. So why use the term “kids”? What is boyland? A jubilee normally occurs every 50 years. So in this jubilee the children will expect a host of toys around the Christmas tree, just like they do now.
You better watch out!
Better not cry!
Better not pout!
I’m telling you why,
Santa Claus is comin’ to town.
The final warning.

Prayer Time

Our Heavenly Father, who is in heaven,
Help us to know the truth and then to speak the truth without hesitation.
In Yeshua the Messiah’s name, Amen.
