How many movies have you watched about Jesus and his life? How many times did you think Jesus was good-looking? Maybe you have a picture of him on your wall or in your Bible. How does he look?
For the majority of the pictures out there the image of Jesus that has flooded our vision is the Caucasian male with blue eyes, long wavy brown hair. For some it’s an African male with brown eyes and short hair. Some black Jesus even have the long wavy hair like in the picture below.
Personally, I have never seen a bad looking Jesus in the movies. Some, by my standard, are down-right good-looking. Even after he’s been beaten and on his way to the cross, he barely looked touched with just a trickle of blood on his forehead.
So the question is what does the Bible say he looks like? Putting aside skin tone, let’s look at scripture. It’s the same scripture in two different Bible versions.
…He was not well-formed or especially handsome; we saw him, but his appearance did not attract us. People despised and avoided him, a man of pains, well acquainted with illness. Like someone from whom people turn their faces, he was despised; we did not value him. (Is. 53:2-3 CJB)
…he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Is. 53:2-3 KJV)
According to this scripture Jesus looked like this also, probably on his way to the cross.
Just as many were appalled at him, because he was so disfigured that he didn’t even seem human and simply no longer looked like a man. (Is. 52:14 CJB)
As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men. (Is. 52:14 KJV)
